Elewana Collection goes to War with the Straw no-straw-please

A year ago Elewana Collection joined the initiative 'Ban the Bottle' and introduced stainless steel water bottles to help reduce Elewana’s carbon footprint by providing a sustainable alternative to bottled water without sacrificing taste, quality or convenience. In our continued efforts to reduce plastic waste we have taken a stand and no longer use plastic straws in our camps, lodges and hotels.

As worldwide awareness grows, large corporates are taking bold steps to reduce plastic waste. From Sky News promoting Ocean Rescue to the pub chain, Wetherspoons, who are replacing plastic straws with biodegradable paper straws, followed by restaurant chain Wagamama - all making it their goal to reduce plastic waste.

When reading the distressing impact of single-use plastic on wildlife and the environment we must all recognise that plastic never goes away. Plastic is a durable material made to last forever, yet 33 percent of it is used once and then discarded. Plastic cannot biodegrade; it only breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces – Elewana is proud to have taken such a stand and joined the many organisations around the world to eliminate its plastic waste.

In a ground breaking initiative, we are happy to announce that we no longer use plastic straws in our properties and have replaced these with biodegradable ones that decompose in 90-120 days” announced by Elewana’s Sales & Marketing Director James Haigh.

We are giving guests at all our properties a choice;

A BIODEGRADABLE STRAW OR NO STRAW.

Be the change - be part of our War with the Straw movement across Elewana.

Land & Life Foundation in 2018

Land & Life has opened the New Year with a strong start, with several generous donations allowing some great projects to get underway.  The Wildlife Warrior Clubs will be busy in term One with water conservation activities leading up to an essay competition to be judged on UN World Water Day March 22nd  by an expert in the field. Term Two will see the exhilarating introduction of our innovative Seedballs for Warriors project with the schools, built around sessions with the children on forestry and soil degradation and giving every child the chance to plant seeds around their homes and schools. We will be developing our own conservation education pack for use in the Wildlife Warrior Clubs, and are excited about introducing these later in the year. All in all it is shaping up to be a busy and productive year for Land & Life, and we look forward to sharing our activities with many Elewana guests. Please don't hesitate to get in touch if you'd like any further information about the work we are doing.

Across both the Kenyan and Tanzanian offices, staff brought in donations of books and food for the primary schools as part of a companywide charity drive.

Elewana The Manor at Ngorongoro showcases the Patrick Mavros collection

Patrick-Mavros-The-ManorElewana The Manor are proud to announce they have added Patrick Mavros to their collection. They primarily stock Zozo and Ndoro Collection but also hold select pieces from the Elephant, Hippo and Pangolin collection.

The Patrick Mavros brand was founded 35 years ago when the then-soldier, Patrick, carved a pair of earrings for his wife, Catja. She wore them to the hair salon, where the hairdresser fell in love with them and instantly requested a pair for herself.

From this loving gift, the business was born into what is recognised today as a uniquely African and distinctively exotic, luxury brand. The Mavros sons, Alexander, Forbes, Patrick Jnr and Benjamin are also passionately involved in the business.

Marrying intricate craftsmanship with an intrepid family heritage, the Mavros’ have not only designed some of the most extraordinary creations in Africa but have also created around them an environment just as magical and bold.

At home, the workshops, the family homestead, the wildlife sanctuary and the studio are all built to form a small village on the family estate in the wild hills outside Harare in Zimbabwe.

Loisaba Conservation Centre Opens

Loisaba-Conservancy-Centre-OpensGuests staying at Elewana Loisaba Tented Camp can learn more about the conservation work that goes on in the area by visiting the new conservation centre that has opened. Elewana Collection continues to support conservation initiatives such as this to ensure that wildlife is protected and can be enjoyed for generations to come.

The Loisaba Conservation Center is located on a 56,000-acre wildlife conservancy in the Laikipia area of northern Kenya, a critically important wildlife habitat. The Center’s main space is decorated with graphical information about conservation and the threats to wildlife. Its aim is to become the hub for conservation education in Laikipia for Laikipia’s community, tourists, partner organizations, government agencies and students. The ultimate goal is for the Center to help inform those who visit Loisaba about community-based conservation and how this model, with their support, will help preserve the area’s habitat and the endangered animals that live here.
