The Masai Mara & The Mara North Conservancy

This is the greatest wildlife spectacle in the world!

Greater Mara covers an area of 8000 km sq, a vast fertile wilderness. The Mara is the northern part of the great Serengeti / Masai Mara ecosystem. The Mara is higher in altitude, cooler, has more hills, is more fertile and receives more rainfall (approx. 760mm per year) and is therefore lusher and greener than the long plains of the Serengeti.

Because of this abundance of grazing and vegetation, the Mara has dense populations of wildlife, both the plains game, Thompson’s gazelle, zebra, giraffe, topi, wildebeest, impala …, and therefore plentiful predators.

During the months of June to November, the majority of the zebra and wildebeest in this vast eco-system congregate on the lush fertile plains of the Mara, gathering nutrient, before returning south to the plains of the Serengeti at the end of the year, although of course, very many are resident within the Mara.

Of this vast wilderness, 70,000 acres, is the private conservancy of Mara North Conservancy. Gamedriving in this area is limited to only the camps based here. Being private, yet central to the vast Masai Mara eco-system, the Elephant Pepper guides have easy access to the reserve, zebra and wildebeest crossings, and outstanding gameviewing within the conservancy.

Climate

At an altitude of 5500 – 6400 ft, the days are warm, rising to maximum of 30 deg C, but comfortable with minimum humidity, and the evenings and early mornings are cool. Rainfall is mostly in April and May with an average of 760mm per year.

Elephant Pepper Camp has been the driving force in creating the Mara North Conservancy (MNC) which covers a core parcel of over 70,000 acres bordering the Maasai Mara National Reserve to the north and effectively increasing its size by 20%. The conservancy, established in 2009, provides some of the Masai Mara ecosystem’s prime game viewing, whilst guaranteeing over 800 Masai landowners stable revenue, transparent financial management and the preservation of the ancient balance between wildlife and traditional pastoralism.

Elephant Pepper Camp has worked with the local Masai community for over 20 years, with the creation of MNC only the latest development in preserving this vital wilderness.

Using original Italian recipes passed down from the owner ‘Stefano Cheli’s mother, Elephant Pepper Camp’s cuisine includes a mouth-watering combination of homemade pastas, traditional Italian recipes such as Melanzane Parmigiana and Osso Bucco, and fresh organic salads.

One of the joys of being on safari is to eat together and share your daily adventures with other guests. Communal dining is the normal practice at Elehant Pepper Camp, although private romantic dinners can also be arranged on request.

Meal times are as follows:

  • Breakfast 06.30-10.30 (although most guests enjoy a picnic breakfast while out on their morning game drive)
  • Lunch 13.00-14.30. Guests normally return from their morning game drive for lunch in camp, although we often provide picnic lunches for those doing a full day out.
  • Dinner 20.00 – 21.30. The evening time at camp begins with drinks and bitings around the camp fire, followed by a candlelit dinner in the dining tent.

Elephant Pepper Camp is happy to cater to special diets such as vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, etc. Please make sure your agent informs us well in advance though, so that the camp managers can prepare for your arrival.

Safari Tents

The 8 (4 doubles & 4 twins) spacious luxury safari tents are large, bright and offer spacious bathroom areas. Combined with Indian Raj Campaign furniture, mixing dark wood with intricate brass fittings, the tents have a very classy and elegant feel.

The tents are set underneath a grove of fig and Elephant Pepper Trees and are spaced out to ensure privacy. From your personal verandah or hammock you can watch wildlife roam on the savannah plains…

All tents can fit one extra bed, to accommodate children under the age of 16 years. For families we recommend our brand new Family Tents.

Honeymoon / Family Suites

Elephant Pepper Camp’s two Honeymoon / Family Tents are the ideal accommodation for couples that want extra space and privacy and for families.

The spacious suites each comprise of an ensuite master bedroom and a sitting room, which can be converted into a second bedroom for children under the age of 16 years. The lush bathrooms have double wash basins, flush toilets and hot water showers.

Located at either end of the camp, the Honeymoon / Family Suites offer spectacular views over the savannah plains from your private veranda.

Mara North Airstrip is a 30 minute drive from camp. Musiara airstrip is a 1 hour drive from camp. Both are a 45 min flight from Wilson airport.

Guides

The Elephant Pepper Camp guides are based in camp, in the Masai Mara, and know their backyard intimately. All the guides are Bronze or Silver level Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association certified, and some of our guides have guided in this area for 20 years! Mara North Conservancy, is a privately managed conservancy in the core of the Masai Mara, gamedriving in Mara North is restricted to those vehicles belonging to lodges within the conservancy, so Elephant Pepper guests have this outstanding part of the Masai Mara, almost to themselves. Gamedriving is outstanding, with a resident pride of lions, cheetahs and leopard; and of course the famous zebra and wildebeest migration surrounding camp in months of July – October. Being private, yet central to the vast Masai Mara eco-system, the Elephant Pepper guides have easy access to the reserve, zebra and wildebeest crossings, and outstanding gameviewing within the conservancy.

Activities

The Masai Mara is a vast wilderness abundant with a diverse range of fascinating wildlife, rolling plains, and lush forests.

ecotourism gold eco rating

Located in the Mara North Conservancy, the heart of the Masai Mara ecosystem, Elephant Pepper Camp is the perfect base from which to explore the wonders of the Mara.

The vast, fertile plains of the Maasai Mara boasts a plethora of wildlife; with over 450 bird species and both resident and transient populations of lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant, giraffe, to name a few, the plains are dense with game. Elephant Pepper Camp is perfect for those wanting to observe the spectacle of the migration, classified amoung the “Seven Wonders of the World”, when, from July to November, over 1.3 million wildebeest and zebra cross from the Serengeti in search of greener pastures.

The camp’s remote location allows the stars to shine bright at night, undimmed by harsh lighting; guests enjoy the unique experience of listening to the sounds of lion, leopard and hyena foraging and hunting, whilst being cosseted with traditional and modern comforts such as a campfire and cosy duvets.

Upon waking, tea and freshly-baked biscuits ease guests into a morning of game drives or bush walks across the conservancy in the company of highly experienced local guides and wildlife rangers. Blankets warm the guests on night game drives back to camp after sundowners in the bush. Delicious Northern Italian cuisine, fresh baking and sensational salads complete the rustic luxury sensation.
