Lewas Women Microenterprise Programme

When guests stay at Lewa Safari Camp and Kifaru House, they're not just experiencing incredible safari accommodation, they help support life-changing community programs within Lewa Conservancy, like the Women Microenterprise Programme (WME). Launched in 2001 and disbursing its first loan in 2003, the WME has grown significantly over the last 23 years thanks to its partnership with the Women's Microfinance Initiative, a US-based non-profit.

Today, the program serves as a catalyst for change, supporting over 2,000 women through innovative table banking groups that provide access to affordable, collateral-free loans.

Women entrepreneurs are using this financial springboard to launch new ventures and expand existing businesses, creating a ripple effect of prosperity throughout their communities. Beyond financial support, WME offers business training, mentorship, adult literacy programs, and health screenings.

In Ntirimiti, women have noted remarkable improvements in their ability to invest in livestock, access medical care, and fund their children's education. Members of the Mutunyi Women's group recently commented, "They have lifted us. They gave us money which boosts us in farming and educating our children. We women have learned to form women’s groups, and working for ourselves really helps us.”
