Elephant Pepper Camp is set to welcome guests back for the high season with a series of extensive refurbishments which encompass guest accommodation and the central areas of the camp, as well as a brand-new culinary concept.

The extensive renovation includes refurbished guest tents with updated furniture, providing comfortable and stylish accommodation for guests. The camp's arrival experience has been thoughtfully re-worked with a redesigned entrance way and a significant upgrade to the bar tent, featuring new furniture to create an enhanced and inviting space for relaxation and socialising. Upgrades have also been applied to the mess tents. This is the final phase of the renovation, as many common areas were already completed in December 2024, including a dedicated private dining space with upgraded furniture. The camp’s boutique has been repositioned and features refreshed furniture, while convenient new public washrooms were also added.

Complementing the camp’s refurbishment is the new culinary concept "Elephant and Pepper” centred around the ancient art of fire cooking. Drawing inspiration from traditional African bushcraft and global smokehouse techniques, the fire kissed safari dining experience is part of a relaunched overall menu featuring slow-smoked meats, ember-roasted vegetables, and fire-grilled seafood infused with rich local spices and cooked over aromatic acacia wood. Guests can look forward to open-fire feasts, smoke-infused cocktails and foraged flavours creating a deep connection between food, fire, and the Mara’s raw beauty. Traditional braai equipment is being sourced to ensure authentic preparation methods that honour this timeless cooking tradition.

The spa experience has been significantly enhanced with a reconfigured dedicated spa room, providing a larger, tranquil ambiance for treatments and the new in-house dedicated sundowner space is the perfect spot to enjoy G&Ts with stunning views of the surrounding wilderness. The reception floor and boutique have also been upgraded, improving the arrival and retail experience for all visitors.

In addition to the renovation, guests can enjoy a delicious new culinary vision that pays homage to Kenya's diverse food traditions. The refreshed menu features slow-simmered stews, grilled meats, and vibrant garden harvests, with each meal a tribute to the warmth, tradition, and untamed spirit of the land. Breakfast has been elevated with elegant individual servings of yogurt parfaits, overnight oats, and chia puddings alongside seasonal fruit skewers, freshly pressed juices, and homemade pastries. Last month, Kifaru House Lewa donated tree seedlings from their in-house tree nursery to the Ntumburi Secondary School as part of their ongoing conservation efforts with the local schools in the area. A total of 196 seedlings from seven different species of trees were planted. Kifaru House staff and the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy team accompanied the students in planting the trees, and this was followed by a short talk by the camp staff on the importance of conservation and the different career opportunities available to them.

This was a great team effort by the Ntumburi Secondary School, Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and Kifaru House Lewa staff.

To enrich students' learning experience at Esiteti Primary School, the staff at Tortilis Camp Amboseli organise regular visits to the school, engaging with the students on topics ranging from conservation to hospitality.

At the end of March, one of the Tortilis guides, John Njoroge, visited Esiteti Primary and spoke to over 100 students across Grades 1 to 9. He discussed the importance of preserving the environment, the local wildlife and their vital roles in maintaining a healthy ecosystem, how communities and wildlife can coexist, and the key role tourism plays in conservation.

John had a wonderful time interacting with the kids and put it perfectly in his own words:

“The main reason for educating children on environmental conservation from a young age is because I believe children are the first link in the formation of an ecological culture, ecological thinking and an ecological knowledge.”

Loisaba Conservancy wins Responsible Travel Award

Loisaba Conservancy has been awarded a ‘one to watch’ award in the Nature Positive Responsible Tourism category at the Responsible Tourism Awards which took place at WTM Cape Town on the 10th April. Highlighted amongst only 20 organisations across Africa this accolade underpins the conservancy’s commitment to conservation.

Harold Goodwin, ICRT global founder and chair of the judges said:

“These are not easy awards to win. The judging process is intense. To be on this recognition list is a massive achievement. By entering these awards you shine a light on ideas and innovation that will inspire others. We know taking responsibility for tourism is hard, but your work has shown what is possible. Together we will inspire the Responsible Tourism changemakers of the future.”
